RESIDENTS in Dennistoun are demanding action to end parking chaos on the streets around their homes.

Recently, SNP councillor Allan Casey and members of the community council raised their concerns at a meeting in the City Chambers.

They told Anna Richardson, convener for sustainability and carbon reduction, of the problems they face trying to park near their properties.

Mr Casey said: "Since my election in May, one of the biggest issues raised has been parking in the area and commuter traffic.

"There is a large workforce at City Park in Dennistoun and seven days a week, hundreds of cars come into the area and park in the streets surrounding their work place.

"It is extremely difficult to park on the streets around City Park and as soon as you drive out of a space, someone is waiting to go into it.

"The problem exists between 7am and 8pm and over the past three or four years has gradually been getting worse."

Mr Casey said the situation is exacerbated by commuters dumping their cars in Dennistoun and catching a train into their work in the city centre.

He added: "The result is people cannot get parked anywhere near their houses and some are parking illegally on double yellow lines, pavements and corners."

Local people fear the situation will get worse if new parking restrictions are introduced around Celtic Park on match days with football fans or people attending major events at the stadium leaving their cars in residential streets in Dennistoun.

Some are calling for residents parking and a pay and display scheme to be introduced to ease the situation for local people.

Mr Casey said: "Some kind of action need to be taken. There needs to be a solution because as it stands, the area is full of cars and residents are really struggling to get any spaces in their area."
