TWO people who may have witnessed a 95-year-old woman being robbed are being sought by police.

Detectives are studying CCTV footage after an elderly woman was robbed of her handbag as she walked along New Street in Irvine.

She was targeted at around 4.50pm on Wednesday at the rear of the multi-story car park at the Rivergate Shopping Centre.

The thief then fled towards Marks and Spencer, leaving the woman uninjured, but shaken.

Police have been gathering CCTV footage and want to talk to two people seen walking from Marks and Spencers at the retail park towards New Street at the time of the incident who may have vital information to help with their enquiries.

The suspect is described as between 20-30 years of age and was wearing a grey hooded top at the time of the incident.

Detective Inspector Mick Carr, of Saltcoats Police Station, said: “This was a callous attack on an elderly woman who has understandably been left traumatised.

"She was simply making her way home after visiting some friends.

“We now know from CCTV footage that there may have been witnesses to this attack and appeal for anyone who may have seen something to come forward or contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Saltcoats Police Station via 101 quoting incident number 2496 of Wednesday 15 November or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.
