CHRISTMAS has kicked off in sparkling style with the biggest event in Glasgow's festive calendar.
Around 16,000 revellers joined Santa, the Lord Provost Eva Bolander, and Strictly Come Dancing star Joe McFadden to watch the Christmas lights being switched on at George Square tonight.
Entertainment throughout the evening was provided by Radio Clyde and once the lucky young schoolboy pressed the big red button, a spectacular display of fireworks were set off from the roof of the City Chambers.
The much-loved event was the hottest ticket in town. In total, 317,184 passes were requested via the ballot – over half the population of Glasgow.
The lights will be on in George Square until early in the New Year.
In addition to the lights, a traditional Christmas Market will be open in George Square on November 25. The Style Mile Carnival returns to Glasgow on November 26 and Baby’s First Christmas is on December 2.
The Blessing of the Crib takes place on December 6 and the Santa Dash is on December 10.
