THOUSANDS of children in Glasgow are forced to share a bed with siblings or family members while others are sleeping on sofas, new research shows.

Children’s charity Buttle UK said it estimates some 3400 children in Glasgow do not have a bed of their own.

The charity said more than 400,000 children in the UK do not have a bed of their own, which leads to a child lacking sleep, affecting concentration at school.

This means that more than 3400 children across Glasgow could be starting the day at a disadvantage to others having not had a proper night’s sleep.

CEO Gerri McAndrew said: “It is simply wrong that over 3400 children across the Glasgow are without beds to call their own.

"This campaign is not only shedding light on this terrible injustice but taking decisive action to make the lives of some of the most vulnerable children better.”

Buttle UK makes grants directly to children and families in need and said one of the most frequently supplied items are children’s beds with 3600 provided across the UK in the last year.

It has been named the official Charity of the Italian Job - a driving holiday in Italy next summer following in the tracks of the of Michael Caine’s 1969 caper film.

This week Buttle UK ambassador Judge Rinder opened registration for people to take part in the Italian Job and raise needed money for beds.
