A sweet-toothed thief was jailed for a YEAR for stealing a packet of JAFFA CAKES.

John Saunders made off with the tasty after breaking into a pub then arguing with cops - while still holding the beloved orange chocolate biscuits.

The 37-year-old then attempted to break into a nearby business but failed to open its tills, and was spotted by the owner while trying to escape.

An officer investigating the original burglary arrested Saunders, who was still clutching the Jaffa Cakes from his earlier burglary as he tried to leave the scene in Dartford, Kent.

He also stole 300 cigarettes.

At Maidstone Crown Court last Monday Saunders, from Canterbury, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and was sentenced to 12 months in prison.

PC Peter Hyland of Kent Police said: "Rather than enjoy his stolen treats Saunders will now experience the bitter taste of a prison sentence."
