AN elderly couple who found love on a bus say they have been "overwhelmed" by the reaction from the Glasgow public.

We told how Phil McCusker, 89, and Helen McAllister, 84, met by chance on a trip to Oban, proving that age is no barrier to romance.

The couple say they have inundated with kind words and gestures since we told their happy tale.

They were treated to a bottle of bubbly and a round of applause at Sloan's restaurant after shopping for an engagement ring.

Phil wanted to treat Helen to "a nicer" ring in the Argyle Arcade and the couple were delighted when Fraser Harts jeweller offered them a generous discount.

Love blossomed after Philip, a retired cartoonist from Cathcart, offered to help Helen, a retired nurse from Helensburgh, when her seatbelt got stuck.

Two years after their first encounter, the pensioners are now engaged and have travelled all round the world, visiting Ibiza, Portugal and the luxury Dorchester Hotel in London.

The couple were just about to head off on an Egyptian cruise.

Phil, who is a father of seven, said: "First came dozens of cards from friends and relatives.

"That, that was expected goes without saying but what followed was truly fantastic.

"When Helen and I visited Sloan's restaurant in the Argyle Arcade, we were greeted by management and given complimentary Champagne while the customers and staff cheered.

"Later, when we visited Harts the jeweller to make a purchase, we were given £100 off the bill.

"On and on it goes, wherever we go."

Helen, who said they haven't yet set a date for the wedding, said; "I've never felt so important in my life. It's been wonderful."
