The overhead wires have been damaged between Motherwell and Whifflet and have caused major disruptions to several routes.

Angry travellers have been contacting Scotrail on Twitter to complain about the chaos caused.

One user @Outnumbered2to1 said: "3 trains in a row cancelled with no actual staff on the platform to explain what's happening meant waiting 45 minutes with an increasingly anxious 10 yr old who doesn't cope well with changes to his routine Thanks for that."

Another, @yossarian67 added: "I understand the network is having problems but maybe having actual humans on hand to provide information would count as customer service. A shocking display of service today, disgraceful lack of information about alternative transportation, angry."

A Scotrail spokesperson said: "Our engineers are on site and working to rectify the fault, they are requiring more time to complete the repairs. After this time alterations to our train service may still occur due to our sets and crews being out of postion."
