A SON on trial accused of murdering his mother by dousing her in petrol and setting her on fire was left everything in her will.

The High Court in Glasgow was today told that William Kelly, 41 - who denies murdering his 71-year-old mother Catherine Kelly at her home in Kilmaurs Road, Kilmarnock, on February 11 - was named as her sole beneficiary.

His sister Catherine Cree, 53, told the jury she was left nothing in the will.

Mrs Cree, a deputy charge nurse at Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock, told the court that up to that time she was a regular visitor to her mother’s house where her brother Kelly also lived.

But, the court heard that they fell out when Mrs Cree suggested to her mother, who turned to drink after losing her husband who was a partner in Kilmarnock Engineers in February 2015, that she should feed her West Highland terrier earlier in the day.

Prosecutors allege that Kelly initially dragged his mother from a car into their home, then punched and kicked the retired care worker and positioning her her face down on a carpet.

It is alleged that he then murdered her by pouring petrol over his mother's body and setting her on fire.

Kelly also faces other allegations in relation to his mother.

He faces a separate allegation of attacking his partner Eleanor Banks between 2015 and 2017, including accusations he hit her with a lamp and struck her with a hammer.

Kelly denies all the charges against him.

The trial before judge Lady Stacey continues.
