The season of goodwill is in full swing as The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice announced it is just £1m away from its £21m fundraising target.

The charity's Brick by Brick Appeal has now raised £20m towards its goal of building a brand new palliative care facility in Bellahouston Park.

With a target of £21m, this campaign been the biggest appeal ever by an independent UK hospice.

The flagship building, which will replace the current hospice site on Carlton Place, is set to be ready for patients in the spring.

Rhona Baillie, chief executive of The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to announce this fantastic news.

"The roof is on our new home, the windows and doors are in place and now reaching £20m takes us one step closer to finishing the journey we started five years ago with the Brick by Brick Appeal.

"We can't thank enough the people of Glasgow, our supporters in London and all around the world for helping us get this far - it is an incredible achievement."

The new hospice building will provide care for up to 1,200 new patients and families every year in a design first for the UK.

The site will also be the first UK hospice to be built with the Sengetum model of care, a Scandinavian design which bosses hope will revolutionise patient care by boosting wellbeing and creating a calming environment.

Being surrounded by green space, Bellahouston Park is expected to provide the perfect site for this style of care.

One of the roles of the new hospice will be to aid the transition of young patients, now from as young as 16, into adult hospice care.

As well as providing the charity's original Carlton Place townhouse, Glasgow City Council has now given The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice their new 7.5 acre site in Bellahouston.

Glasgow Lord Provost Eva Bolander, president of the hospice, said: "Glasgow and The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice have a shared history and strong bonds.

"The council donated the current Carlton Place properties to the hospice and is a firm supporter of its work.

"It's great to continue that history of friendship and support at this exciting time as the hospice looks forward to opening its new premises in Bellahouston Park on land I am proud to say the city also donated for this important and much-admired charity."

Supporters can still donate to the appeal, with the latest phase of the appeal, Raise the Roof currently ongoing.
