GLASGOW has received grants of more than £15,000 thanks to the Gannett Foundation.

Across the UK donations of nearly £300,000 were made to charities on behalf of Newsquest Media Group, which owns the Evening Times.

Over the last ten years alone, Newsquest has given more than £3 million to help charitable community causes.

This latest round of giving will see Glasgow Old Peoples Welfare Association receive £2100 to replace a central heating boiler in a day centre.

Riding for the Disabled will be given £3600 to buy a horse for a group providing equine therapy classes.

Scottish Youth Dance, based in Glasgow, is also celebrating with an award of £3265 to deliver a community dance group.

And Street Connect Scotland will receive £6300 towards the refurbishment and purchasing of new equipment for an outreach cafe supporting people with drug and alcohol addiction.

Chairman of the trustees, Simon Westrop, said: “We were glad to be able to give to some exciting projects making people’s lives better in all sorts of ways – like the Oxford Playhouse plan to wrap up theatre and take it out to isolated and disadvantaged communities in Oxfordshire in a tent donated by Newsquest.

"Year on year, we are seeing better applications with more focused attention on different ways of helping - caring for the present but also building for the future."

The two biggest awards of £15,000 each went to two charities founded in the 19th century by a group of benefactors including novelist Charles Dickens.

Both the Journalists’ Charity and Newstraid help people who have worked in the newspaper industry but have fallen on hard times.

Applications can be made through any local Newsquest Media Group editor.
