FOOTBALL clubs, hairdressers and car washes are among the latest list of employers named and shamed for not paying staff the national minimum wage.

The UK Government listed those who failed to pay the legal minimum to at least one member of staff.

It includes hairdressers in Glasgow city centre and Paisley as well as a south side chemist and a car wash at Braehead.

Motherwell FC, Greencok Morton and Falkirk FC are also on the list.

Motherwell fell short for 12 workers totalling £2,755.34, Morton £2,382.46 for six workers and Falkirk one former employee by £494.51.

The UK national minimum wage rates are £7.50 per hour for 25 and over, £7.05 for 21-to-25 year olds, £5.60 for 18.20 and £4.05 for under 18s.

In Glasgow, Hughes Chemist, in Kinning Park failed to pay £2,423.74 to two workers.

Influence Conditioned Air Limited, in Glasgow city centre, failed to pay £1,551.32 to one worker Hair and beauty salon Philosophi Limited in Glasgow city centre, failed to pay £1,012.49 to one worker.

Other west of Scotland employers on the list include Mrs Rena Muir trading as TRC Hair Design, in Paisley, who underpaid one worker by £3,315.07.

Handy Andy Car Wash, run by Dhimiter Arkelaos in Braehead, owed two workers £2,852.76.

Lynne McCullough, trading as Lynne Capelli Salon, in Dumbarton, failed to pay three workers a total of£620.65.

The Holiday and Flight Centre Limited, in Hamilton, failed to pay £2,242.08 to one worker.

The UK Government pledhed that firms would continue to be named and shamed for as long as they do not pay the full minimum wage rate.

Lord Duncan, Minister for Scotland, Lord Duncan, said: “We simply will not stand by while companies diddle workers out of their pay. “The UK Government will not stand for it, and will continue to ‘name and shame ‘ until all workers are properly paid.”

Meanwhile union leaders have called for an investigation into wages in Scottish football.

Pat Rafferty, Unite Scottish secretary said:“We need to know if this shaming of Motherwell, Morton and Falkirk is actually the tip of a gigantic iceberg.”
