Settled snow has turned to treacherous ice and caused disruption on roads and railways across the country as forecasters warn of more freezing temperatures.

The Met Office has extended its yellow weather warnings for snow and ice to cover vast swathes of the country, including northern and western Scotland.

The weather service said of Glasgow’s outlook for tonight: “Showers, wintry over high ground, will die away overnight. A widespread frost, and some icy stretches, will develop under clearing skies.

“Minimum temperature will be -6°C.”
