The SNP are "the political manifestation of Veruca Salt", a Tory MP has claimed.

Luke Graham compared his Scottish opponents to the character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, given they always demand more and more and are never satisfied.

SNP MP Alison Thewliss hit back that the Tories were creating more families like Charlie Bucket's "with old people huddling together in the bed because they can't afford to live".

Ochil and South Perthshire MP Mr Graham began the references to the Roald Dahl novel during the second reading of the Finance (No. 2) Bill, which introduces measures contained in Chancellor Philip Hammond's Budget last month.

"No matter how high the price, no matter how good the deal, the SNP are not satisfied," Mr Graham said.

"It reminds me of a Roald Dahl story, I think it's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

"We've got the political manifestation of Veruca Salt sat just across from us.

"They go from room to room shouting what they want, demanding more and more, and yet they are never satisfied.

"Whereas we on this side of the House have heard the interests of our constituents and we've delivered for them."

In an intervention, Glasgow Central MP Ms Thewliss said: "Does he not accept that this Government is creating, actually, far more families of Charlie Bucket, with old people huddling together in the bed because they can't afford to live?"

Mr Graham replied: "I couldn't disagree more, and with more money going directly to the front services, and lowering taxes for those working families most in need, I think you'll know that actually Charlie and Grandpa are on this side of the House now, not on their side."
