Tributes have been paid to Rangers superfan George Barnett who became a viral sensation in 2012 when the club went into administration.

Fans unfurled a banner at the match against Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday in memory of the lifelong supporter who died suddenly at home on December 1 aged 58.

It read: “RIP George Barnett, 1959-2017.

“The big house did stay open.”

Fans were making reference to a TV interview George took part in on the day the Ibrox club went into administration in February 2012.

Standing outside the stadium, he said: “The league’s gone and that’s it.”

Then, in a catchphrase which was widely circulated, he added: “The bottom line is, the big house must stay open.”

Admirers of the Light Blues supporter have also turned to Twitter to share touching tributes.

The funeral service is set to take place at Daldowie Crematorium in Broomhouse this Thursday (December 14) at 1.45pm.
