Scots rocker Kyle Falconer has admitted hurling homophobic abuse at a male cabin crew member who told him to stop his rowdy behaviour during a Jet 2 flight back to Scotland.

The View frontman pleaded guilty to the offence at Paisley Sheriff Court yesterday.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Margaret McCallum said Falconer was asked to behave after bumping in to the woman and spilling drink on her.

The prosecutor explained: “The accused took umbrage at this request and stood up in, what’s described as, ‘an aggressive manner’ and began to shout and swear at the male passenger.

“On doing so, he was using the word ‘f***’.

“A member of cabin crew became aware of the commotion and asked the accused to calm down, to stop shouting and sit down, which the accused refused to do.

“Overheard by one of the witnesses was the phrase, ‘is that right, ya p***?’.

“Another member of cabin crew became concerned and thought the actions of the accused might be a safety risk.

“She informed the pilot and the pilot had decided to divert the flight to Nantes.

“The accused settled down and remained quiet until the flight landed in France, where the aircraft was met by French police.”

The court heard he had was left with a bill of £25,000 for his actions, made up of £14,000 in fees for causing the flight to be diverted to France, £9,000 in legal fees and the £1,000 he was fined for the offence.

His lawyer  Ian Houston  told the court that the Dundee singer had been left almost penniless despite having a successful music career playing all over the world.

Ian Houston said of Falconer, whose band had a UK Number 1 album with 2007 release Hats Off to the Buskers: "The band have incurred considerable debts to the extent that the members are paid a weekly wage of £350.

"He has a fiancée and an eight-month-old daughter – a child he dotes on.

"This whole event has cost him £25,000 – money he doesn’t have and will have to work hard to pay back.

"They do not own a home, they live in a rented flat in Dundee.

"He has no assets. I can’t say, and neither can he, what happened to the money he must have earned.

"He is deeply ashamed of this, especially the homophobic remark, given he has friends and relatives who are gay.

"He just wants to get on with the rest of his life."

Fining him £1000, sheriff David Pender said: "An offence of this type in the confines of an aircraft cabin must be very, very distressing to those affected by it."
