FOOTBALL fans have been warned they could face arrest if they bring illegal items into this weekend's match between Heart of Midlothian and Celtic.

Edinburgh cops are issuing the warning ahead of the SPFL fixture which kicks off at Tynecastle Stadium at 12.30 pm on Sunday.

Police will be in place in and around the venue to ensure the safety of spectators before, during and after the match.

Officers will also assist stewarding staff with conducting searches of those entering the ground and supporters are reminded that contraband items such as alcohol, flares and weapons are strictly forbidden.

Anyone found in possession of any of these items will not be allowed into the stadium and will face further police action.

Chief Inspector Kevin McLean, Match Commander on the day, said: "We anticipate this match being a sell-out with several thousand fans making their way to Tynecastle to watch their respective teams and we'll have suitable resources in place to keep the spectators safe and minimise disruption to the rest of the public.

"As always, we would ask those attending the game to ensure their behaviour does not put themselves or others in danger and to refrain from bringing illegal items with them. These will be confiscated and you will be charged or issued with a fixed penalty notice.

"Please also know your limits in terms of alcohol consumption, as you will be turned away from the gate if you appear too drunk.

"We know the vast majority of supporters from both teams are a credit to their clubs, however, sadly on occasion a small minority behave in a manner that is not appropriate and we are committed to ensuring these individuals do not ruin the match for everyone else."
