Glasgow bars have stepped in to make Christmas nights out that bit better for the “unsung heroes” of the festive party season this year.

Designated drivers are being offered free Coca-Cola courtesy of the US soft drink giant as a thank you to those who help their loved ones get home safely over the course of the most wonderful time of the year.

A special ‘buy one, get one free’ offer has been made available at hundreds of pubs, bars and restaurants across Scotland until December 31.

The offer can be taken up by simply showing your keys at the bar.

The campaign is being run alongside the Government’s iTHINK! initiative which targets those who think it’s okay to have “a couple” of drinks before driving.

The campaign provides a positive reason to not have that second drink if driving as it doubles motorists’ chances of being in a fatal collision.

Young men are the primary target of the campaign as 62 per cent of drink drivers killed on UK roads are male.

“The countdown to Christmas is here and it’s no secret that the designated driver always saves the day during the festive party season,” said Aedamar Howlett, marketing director for Coca-Cola Great Britain.

He added: “We are celebrating the people who put their friends and families first and offer them a treat this Christmas.”
