A GROUP will be created to help with the naming of a new school in Glasgow’s East End.

Glasgow City Council has involved the community of Dalmarnock in the naming process just as building work on the new £22.8 million school begins.

The group will also be responsible for other tasks such as deciding the school uniform - and parents and carers living in the area are urged to get involved.

The yet-to-be named primary will be built to deal with the influx of new residents who moved into the former athletes’ village.

Dalmarnock’s new primary will provide 14 classrooms, assembly and gym halls; drama and nurture rooms; administrative and office space; and a library.

In a letter to parents, the local authority’s executive director of education services Maureen McKenna said: “You will have noticed that building work has begun. This is very exciting for the community. Glasgow City Council is setting up a group of parents and carers to help with tasks such as naming the school and deciding school uniform.”

She added: “One of the first tasks for the group will be to help decide on the new school name. As a first step we need each family to give us their suggestion.

“Children in local schools and nurseries will also contribute suggestions.

“The parent group will help to narrow this down to three or four suggestions, and we will contact you again and ask your family to vote.”

Many residents have already suggested Springfield Primary as the name to pay tribute to the school which was previously on the site.

Springfield Primary opened on Allan Street in Dalmarnock in 1969 before closing in 2003.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, City Convener for Education, Skills and Early Years, said: “This is a great opportunity for parents, families and carers to get involved in helping to shape the new school community.

“Everyone will have an opportunity to put forward their ideas and suggestions in time for the new school opening in August, 2018.”
