Glasgow’s gritters are out in full force across the city today as temperatures are set to drop in what is expected to be another freezing night.

Glasgow City Council has made the announcement on its social media pages this afternoon, saying - among others - priority areas will be seen to.

The local authority said: “Gritting on outer priority footways and footbridges will begin at 12.30 this afternoon, with outer priority routes to be treated from 8pm, and gritting to take place in other areas throughout.

“Priority routes include those to schools, hospitals, police and fire stations, bus depots, city centre precincts, steep hills, park-and-ride stations, bus stations, and garages.

“We always prioritise main roads and bus routes to ensure the city continues to move and that necessary journeys can be undertaken safely.”

The council’s announcement comes as it faces criticism over its gritting service during this week’s cold snap with roads and pavements described as “treacherous.”

Hundreds of people from across the city reacted angrily to a Facebook post by the local authority on Wednesday evening which said it “would continue to grit routes, footways and footbridges overnight.”
