A FIVE year-old boy from Glasgow could teach grown-ups a thing or two about the true spirit of Christmas.

Young Riley Watson has been hailed a hero by his proud gran after giving all his pocket money to a rough sleeper.

Riley’s gran Michelle Docherty, 47, said: “I couldn’t be more proud of a human being.”

The little boy was on his way to George Square to enjoy the Christmas carnival when he noticed a man on the ground huddled up in a sleeping bag during this week’s freezing temperatures.

Riley’s gran said without prompting he walked over and gave the man all the money in his pocket, around a fiver, leaving the homeless man close to tears.

Riley, from Cathcart, who is a pupil at St Fillan’s Primary, was treated to a return visit to the carnival yesterday, by his proud gran, Michelle, 47.

She said: “We were standing in the street and hadn’t even noticed the man sitting there.

“Riley just said, ‘That man doesn’t have any money and I do.’

“He just went into his pocket and took all his money out. There were four pound coins and a couple of 50p pieces.

“Everyone around started saying to him, ‘you are so kind.’

“He found another 5p and then went back and gave him that too.

“The homeless man shook his hand and said, ‘Merry Christmas’. He was almost crying.

“Riley walked away with the biggest smile on his face. He’s a very thoughtful wee boy but he’s very shy.

“I was saying to him, we should tell your teacher but he didn’t want me to. He said: ‘I know in my head it was good.’

“He gave him every single penny he had without prompting.

“I’m so proud of him.”
