THE family of a young boy undergoing treatment for a rare blood disease have started a fundraising campaign for the ward helping him.

Michael Hughes launched the campaign after noticing that the toys in the Schiehallion ward at Glasgow Children’s hospital were running low.

The family visits the ward regularly where son Reece, 5, is being treated for Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a rare blood condition.

While spending hours at a time in the ward, they noticed that arts and crafts materials and games seemed to be disappearing.

After speaking with staff on the ward, they decided to start a drive to get as many new toys on the ward as possible.

Michael said: “Some days we’re in there from nine in the morning until after five in the evening and it’s difficult to keep all the kids entertainment.

“There is a box with arts and crafts and toys, like GameBoys and things but they’ve been disappearing over the past four months.

“The staff have noticed it too. I don’t know if maybe families are taking stuff home but there’s hardly anything left.

“We want to raise £350 just to make sure the box is full for everyone.”

The fundraising page will be open until the middle of January when they will be hitting the shops to buy the goods.
