GLASGOW City Council have been slammed for failing to grit roads ahead of predicted heavy snow.

Residents across the city have been left questioning whether the council had heeded warnings for snowfall as many roads were left untouched by gritters.

Busy streets including Byres Road and Maryhill Road were described as ‘treacherous’ by motorists after 5cm of snow fell overnight.

Bus services are also facing significant problems with various services unable to complete their routes.

First Bus Glasgow informed travellers that streets including Cochno Road in Clydebank, Linkwood Drive and Tallant Road in Drumchapel, Ruchill and Newlands could not be serviced due to the weather.

Another bus was unable to pick up passengers after becoming stuck on a hill on Clevedon Road in Kelvindale, while cars stuck at the top of Hyndland Street stopped traffic.

Glasgow Times:

Evening Times readers contacted us on social media to highlight the streets most badly affected.

Kate McCall said: "City centre pavements are treacherous. Specifically Bothwell Street and West Campbell Street."

Craig Alcorn added: "What's a gritter? Haven't seen one GCC gritter all month round about streets. Place is covered in black ice and in my street there's a blind persons centre and its bad enough for them to get into it."

Maggie McQueen said: "Ancaster Drive at Great Western Road in Anniesland. Not been touched and there's a sheltered housing complex at the end of the street."

Glasgow Times:

One angry driver, who did not want to be named, commented: “Byres Road this morning was a mess, as was Great Western Road. The snow had been falling for hours before I left home yet there was no sign of any gritters anywhere.

“The side streets were thick with snow but Byres Road and Great Western Road are major thoroughfares – they should have been a top priority.

“I drove at just under 20 miles per hour all the way into the city centre and other drivers were being just as cautious because of the state of the roads.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous that the council hadn’t organised gritters.

“Motorists – and pedestrians – are put at risk in weather like this when the roads aren’t properly prepared for winter.”

Another resident added: "Once again no gritters been out well done cars are sliding up hills so expect a few bills for the damage to peoples cars for not doing your jobs properly!"

A spokesman for ScotRail said that there had not been any delays caused by weather to their services.

Operations at Glasgow Airport were suspended as staff worked to clear runways.

At around 10am the travel hub tweeted it was back up and running, but winter operations staff would be on standby throughout the day.

Glasgow City Council have been contacted for comment.
