Glasgow commuters were braced for travel misery during rush hour this morning as thick fog wreaked havoc on Scotland’s roads.

Traffic Scotland warned motorists to “be aware” after a seven-car accident on the M8 Eastbound at Junction 6 Newhouse brought a lane to a close, resulting in one man being hospitalised.

Traffic had been backing up past Eurocentral in North Lanarkshire as of 7.20am as emergency services and the Trunk Road Incident Support Service (TRISS) attend the crash.

A Police Scotland spokesman said the accident happened due to “extremely foggy weather.”

He added: “The accident happened at around 6.20am.

“Emergency services were at the scene.”

A spokeswoman added: “A 57-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

There was also some routine congestion on the M80.

The Met Office has forecast a dry day with sunny spells for Glasgow and its surrounding areas and has warned of “lingering fog patches.”

A spokesperson for the weather service said: “Today, it will be dry and bright with some sunny spells for most, although areas of low cloud, mist and fog may linger in a few places in the Central Belt.

“Winds will be light everywhere with a maximum temperature of 4C.”

“And tonight there will be some fog patches at first but these will gradually lift as cloudier skies spread up from the southeast,”  reports The Scottish Sun.
