CAMPAIGNERS fighting to preserve the sugar content in Irn-Bru have said the makers ‘don’t care’ about Scottish culture.

More than 47,000 have signed a petition calling for AG Barr to reverse their decision to change the recipe of the beloved soft drink.

Complaints have fallen on deaf ears as bosses confirmed on Wednesday that production of the full-sugar recipe has now been axed.

Ryan Allen, a 29-year-old joiner from Ayr, started the petition the protect the original recipe which contains 10.3.g of sugar per 100ml.

After hearing the news that his campaign had failed to stop the changes, he is asking the public to boycott Barr.

The father-of-two told his supporters that “AG Barr doesn’t give a sh*** what you think. They give zero f***s about preserving a part of Scottish culture and a historic 117 year old recipe.

“They don’t care about people who choose not to or cannot consume chemical sweeteners such as aspartame for health or dietary reasons.

“Go and buy up the last of the proper gear before this Nu-Bru comes in. And when it's all that's left PLEASE stop buying Barrs products. Force their hand by letting your money speak for you.”

The plan to alter Irn-Bru’s recipe has been met with backlash from various Scottish celebrities including Lorraine Kelly.

The Glasgow-born chat queen urged AG Barr not to cut the sugar content.

She said: “Barr’s do sugar-free Irn-Bru, so there’s already a choice. They should reverse this decision. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Lorraine’s comments came just days after ex-Rangers player and manager Ally McCoist threw his weight behind the debacle - by telling its makers to “get it sorted.”

A spokesman for the drinks company confirmed that the production for their new recipe is in ‘full flow’ and urged customers to taste it for themselves.
