IT has been an encouraging transfer window for Rangers so far and I am sure there will be more deals to be done before the end of the month.

After adding Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy to the squad before the trip to America, Jason Cummings and Russell Martin have joined in the last couple of days.

I think the Rangers fans will be satisfied with the business that we have completed and they will be looking forward to seeing the improvement in the team in the second half of the season.

Graeme Murty is signing players that the supporters know and ones that have experience of Scottish football or know what the club is all about.

I think there should be a bit more excitement amongst the fans now and there should be in the changing room as well because there is real competition in the squad.

That is something that Rangers haven’t really had this season. How many times have we looked at the bench and not seen enough options to help us change a game?

The squad has never really been that strong but if you look at the group now I think that is something that Graeme has. He has strength in depth and alternatives.

Every player that has come in is quite entitled to feel that he should be in the starting line-up. It is not a case of joining the squad and waiting for their chance, they can all come in and make an impact right away.

Of course, there are no guarantees, especially at a club like Rangers. It is one thing having pedigree or promise, but it is quite another delivering on that at Ibrox.

On the face of it, Graeme has done some good business and so have the board. They have been under pressure, and at times rightly so, but they are backing the manager this month.

Whether these deals are loans or not, they are still being paid wages and adding to the squad so the board have done their bit.

And I like the choices that Graeme has made. I don’t think the business is done, either.

When you are a selling club, you are entitled to ask whatever you feel is appropriate for a player. If you are buying, you want to get him as cheaply as possible.

That is the situation with every player and with every transfer deal and Rangers are no different in their moves for Greg Docherty and Jordan Jones.

Rangers have made offers and Hamilton and Kilmarnock are quite entitled to reject them. But it is also a clubs’ right to have a valuation of a player and to try and get that player for as low a fee as possible.

If the price goes too high, Rangers can walk away. That is their prerogative and we won’t pay over the odds for players.

Some people will maybe be surprised that Graeme didn’t go for Steven Naismith, but would you rather have him or Cummings? For me, Jason is a more natural striker and that is something that the squad has needed for a long time.

I think Murphy is a fantastic signing as well and he will certainly add to the attacking options, and then you have got Martin providing leadership and experience at the back.

We thought Bruno Alves was going to be that man in the squad but it hasn’t really worked out how we envisaged it would with him.

The other signing so far, Goss, caught the eye in the Florida Cup matches. He looks to be a lovely passer of the ball and a player with a bit of vision in the middle of the park.

There are still questions over how this team will set up and how they will perform with these new additions and the Rangers fans won’t go overboard with the hype. But they are right to be a bit more positive about the second half of the season.

For most of the campaign, we have known what most of the team would be because there wasn’t a lot of competition in the squad. I don’t think you can say that now.

You might get a few players unhappy that people have been brought in in their position but that is what it is all about. If you play well, you are in. If you don’t, you are out, it is as simple as that.

It is up to these new players to come in and show that they have what it takes to play for Rangers and be successful at Rangers.

The fact that Murphy and Goss were with the squad in America will certainly help them settle in but Martin and Cummings have come in over the last few days as the build-up has started to the Fraserburgh game.

After that, there will be a full house at Ibrox for the Aberdeen fixture and that will be a real test for this new-look side.

I have said many times that it is fine getting names in, but can they handle everything that goes with playing for Rangers and cope with the pressure at a club that has got to win every week? Only time will tell.

But I like the players that have been brought in so far and hopefully now they will play for the manager. The fans will give them a chance and it is up to them to make the most of it.
