Another bus operator is raising on-board fares and scrapping some discounted tickets in Glasgow.

McGill’s, which runs services across the city, is introducing new fares from Monday.

The firm is scrapping its all-day student ticket and increasing its student weekly ticket.

A move it said is to offer a discount on adult weekly tickets.

The firm said most of its single and return fares are being frozen, accounting for 77% of its fares.

However, some single and return fares will be increased by either 5p or 10p.

The increases comes after First Glasgow increased it fares by more than 10% on some tickets and scrapped unaccompanied child fares.

The move prompted anger among passengers and politicians who said people on low incomes would be badly affected.

The Evening Times reported this week how the firm conceded on one of the rises and reversed the increase to Jobseeker tickets in the light of Jobcentres closing in Glasgow.

It has come under pressure to do the same with other increases including the child fares.

McGill’s said most of its tickets and routes will be unaffected.
It also said that tickets purchased on the mobile phone app would be frozen.

On the company’s website it states: “Some single and return fares will have a 5p or 10p increase, however our most popular fares, that take up 77% of journeys, will remain unchanged.”

For student tickets it says: “Student all day tickets – these will no longer be available.

“Please purchase your great value student 1-week, 4-week or 10-week tickets instead via McGill’s m-ticket app or GoSmart card.

“Student Weekly tickets. Now only available, like 4-week and 10-week tickets, via McGill’s m-ticket app or GoSmart card. The fares have also been increased to offer a 15% discount on adult weekly tickets.”
