HEAVY snowfall has brought roads in and out of Glasgow to a halt as workers heeded police warnings to leave early.

Drivers returning to the city are facing major delays by a lorry blocking the M77 at Junction 6.

Gritters are said to be on their way to the road but drivers have been warned to expect severe delays with only a few cars getting through 'every now and again'.

The M77 J6 Kingswell, in Ayrshire, is under the Met Office’s amber warning, in place until 10pm tonight with further snow showers expected at 6pm.

In the city, roads surrounding Byres Road and the Clyde Tunnel are said to be extremely congested.

The M74 is also experiencing issues with tailbacks reported on Junction 3a and the Kingston Bridge.

The issues come after Police Scotland warned much of the central belt to avoid using the roads.

Police issued a strong warning to employers to let their workers go home early as Glasgow prepared to be hit with an Arctic weather bomb.

Amber snow and ice “be prepared” warnings came into effect at 3pm covering central and southern Scotland and Strathclyde.

Walking conditions around the city streets are also said to hazardous.

Council gritting teams will be out throughout the night covering priority routes and paths.
