IT will be an extra delicious Burn's Night for these pupils after they had the chance to work with pie experts to create a special supper.

City of Glasgow College bakery lecturer, Jason Ross, helped youngsters prepare a range of Scotch pies and more than 400 oatcakes to serve at their school Burns Supper.

The 16 pupils, aged 12 and 13, from Garnock Community Campus near Beith, attended the special bakery lesson with Jason, who is also a judge for the World Scotch Pie Championships.

Valerie Howe is the school’s home economics teacher and is organising its Burns Supper.

She said: “We wanted to introduce our first year pupils to possible future careers and through their relationship with Scott Anderson, National Training Manager for Scottish Bakers, City of Glasgow College readily agreed to assist our request for help with making oatcakes to serve at our school’s Burns Supper.

"The Scotch pies are a bonus addition and our pupils had great fun helping to prepare them.”

Jason said: “We are delighted to be nurturing the country's future bakers.

"While we provided help and outstanding industry standard kitchens, the pupils were very much hands-on in the process of preparing both the oatcakes and pies.

"It’s a great opportunity to pass on knowledge of a fantastic wide ranging industry to work in, but also for the young people to gain an insight into potential career opportunities."

While the oatcakes and pies were being boxed up, the school pupils were given a tour of the facilities at City campus and an insight into the range of courses they can choose from in the future.

Callum Rose, 13, said: “I really enjoyed rolling out the pastry for the oatcakes and cutting them.

"Today has made me think about what I’d like to do when I leave school.

"I’ve had a lot of fun.”
