THE anti-straw campaign has taken another move forward with a call to ban the plastic items in the Scottish Parliament.

Sunnyside Primary's Ocean Defenders has been using its #NaeStrawAtAw campaign to petition for an end to plastic straws and an improvement in the environment.

So far Glasgow City Council has promised to outlaw straw use, as has CalMac ferry company on its boats.

Now SNP MSP for Glasgow Provan, Ivan McKee, has written to the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body urging it to publish details of when plastic straws will be completely phased out on its premises.

Mr McKee has also demanded to know if there are concrete plans for the Parliament to become plastic free.

The MSP said: “We’re turning our oceans into plastic soup.

"Plastic is a menace we must address. And we can all play our part.

"My own constituency of Glasgow Provan doesn’t have any beaches but that doesn’t stop the magnificent Ocean Defenders of Sunnyside Primary School from pursuing an inspiring and effective campaign to curb the needless and thoughtless use of plastic.

"Their #NaeStrawAtAw campaign has attracted well deserved attention across the country and we should all be encouraged by their amazing efforts – including the Parliament itself."

According to its Environmental Policy, the Scottish Parliament’s vision is to: “Protect the environment by minimising pollution and resource consumption, and supporting and encouraging biodiversity.

"Drive continual improvement of our environmental performance in terms of energy consumption and waste minimisation."

Plastic straws are currently available in the public cafe, members’ restaurant and the Queensbury House lounge, although the Parliament’s in-house caterers are understood to be looking for an alternative that will be fully recyclable.

Mairin and Taylor spoke on behalf of the Sunnyside Ocean Defenders when they said the group was delighted by Mr McKee's support.

They said: "We are delighted that Ivan McKee has taken our campaign back to Holyrood.

"Like the Ocean Defenders,MSPs are keen to lead by example. Scotland, the first plastic straw free country in the world?

"We say it's nae bother at aw with #NaeStrawAtAw."
