A homeless man who died without any family is set to get a send-off after kind-hearted Glaswegians banded together to raise money for his funeral.

“Dublin Dave” was a regular face at the H4TH, Help for the Homeless soup kitchen in the city’s Cadogan Street.

However, after he passed away shortly after New Year, the H4TH team put out an appeal for help.

Breaking the sad news, the group said: “Dublin Dave was a regular at our Thursday night soup kitchen. He was a gentleman and quite a character. Unfortunately, Dave passed away and, with no family to identify, him two of our volunteers had to do this.

“We don’t normally do this, but we would like your help to afford Dave the dignity of a funeral that his friends can attend, most of whom are also soup kitchen regulars.”

In just over a week, the £2,200 target for funds was smashed to raise just over £2,500.

The funds will now be spent on a basic cremation, hiring out a small hall, for someone to conduct the service and for flowers.

Any extra funds will go directly to helping people on the streets “like Dave used to,” said the team. “This will be Dave’s legacy,” H4TH added.

The team continued: “He was a character and loved by so many folks. We just wanted to give Dave a dignified, simple funeral and put on a small reception for the homeless community in Glasgow to have a cup of tea and share stories.”

Having now raised enough money, H4TH said on Saturday: “We would Like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who donated to Dublin Dave’s dignity fund.

“We are overwhelmed and astounded at the generosity you all have shown. Because of your quick action, we can announce Dave’s funeral will take place on Wednesday, February 7 at 3pm at Daldowie Crematorium. Then onto Carntyne Credit Union Hall.”

H4TH also thanked Blantyre-based funeral service Fair Priced Funerals and a local florist for supplying a casket spray from all of Dave’s friends.
