YOUNGSTERS had a story or two to tell River City star Frances Thorburn when she visited the library at Barrhead Foundry.

Pupils from St Mark’s and Carlibar primary schools in Barrhead made sure the actress, who plays Kim Monroe in the BBC Scotland drama, was sitting comfortably before they each took it in turn to read her a story from one of their favourite books.

The children were taking part in the International Literacy Centre’s Read Aloud month, which is a series of events celebrating the pupils’ achievements in learning to read and encouraging them to become role models for other youngsters.

Other well-known adults who have visited, or are due to visit Barrhead Foundry to be read stories by the pupils are Clyde 1 radio presenter Cassi; local children’s author Lizzie Finnigan and professional footballer with Dundee FC Mark O’Hara.

Anthony McReavy, chief executive of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, which operates Barrhead Foundry said: “It was a joy to witness the pupils reading from their favourite storybooks to the celebrities who were good enough to give up their time to come along to Barrhead Foundry.

“We do all we can to help children of all ages develop their reading skills and the youngsters taking part in Read Aloud month did themselves proud when they were reading from books to our guests.”
