Pictures posted on social media show students and staff gathered outside the building.
“Kilmarnock College emptied. Bomb disposal allegedly called out,” wrote one student.
Witch Road and Hill Street were closed down as traffic was diverted along Dean Street and Longpark.
The incident was not believed to be terrorist-related but, in fact, a hoax call. All were taken back into the college.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Evening Times: “Police were called to the college at around 11.30am on Monday, February 5 to an incident believed to be malicious communication.
“The building was evacuated as a precaution.
“Staff, along with the emergency services, carried out an extensive search of the building.”
Nothing was found.
She added: “Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
