A GLASGOW primary pupil has beat hundreds of other schoolkids to take home the top prize in the Thumble Tumble Budding Illustrators Awards.

Angela Proctor is the Glasgow-based author of the Thumble Tumble Book Series, set on the magical Isle of Arran.

Through her network of schools, Angela invited children to illustrate their vision of an 'Eary Lugger' – a character whose traits are to eavesdrop on conversations and report their findings to the evil Night Witches.

Angela received in excess of 1,500 entries from children aged between seven and 11 from schools across Scotland.

As the level of entries received was so high, she enlisted the help of the world renowned Glasgow School of Art to provide the judging.

Dr Donna Leishman, head of Communication and Design, had previously judged the competition therefore her expertise was called upon again.

The winner was Laila Altschul of Glasgow’s Hyndland Primary School with runners-up from Baljaffray, Craigdhu, Gavinburn, Lawthorn and The Glasgow Academy.

Angela said: "Once again, I’m absolutely blown away by the sheer volume and standard of entries for my competition.

"One of my main drives is to entice as many children as possible into the magical world of literature and offering them the opportunity to be immortalised in a book forever really seems to fire up the most amazing imaginations."

Glasgow University hosted the event on Monday within the Hunterian Museum.

Angela added: "The Hunterian Museum was an incredible venue to hold the awards ceremony and hopefully I’ve inspired at least six children along with their friends and classmates to begin their very own magical adventures into the world of books."
