Scots travellers have faced mass disruptions to services across the country today after a problem at Haymarket station lead to the delay and revision of several trains.

Services between Edinburgh, Glasgow and outlying stations have been the most affected.

The rail operator said a “signalling fault” was causing the issues.

A spokesperson for ScotRail said: "We have a signalling fault at Haymarket which has resulted in us not being able to use platform 3 and 4 at the station, we're having to reduce the number of trains we are running.

"Services between Edinburgh - Glasgow Central via Shotts, Helensburgh Central - Edinburgh, and Milngavie - Edinburgh via Airdrie & Bathgate may be delayed or revised.

"First Bus ticket acceptance is in place between Bathgate - Edinburgh for any Helensburgh/Milngavie service which we may have to terminate at Bathgate."

Angry commuters have taken to social media to compain about the disruptions that seem to occur 'every week'.

Twitter user @1969jdr wrote:"Every week this line is disrupted. It’s just not good enough."

Another @ODB_69 said: "Perhaps it's about time you updated the signalling system seeing how it fails most days?"

Possible further disruptions can also be expected across Scotland's transport links this weekend after the Met Office issued another weather warning, forecasting severe snow and ice from Saturday night into Sunday.
