ANGRY residents are stepping up their fight to stop a developer turning a quiet street into a busy road.

They claim Bellway Homes is planning to shut a main street for traffic in the east end which residents claim would turn a quiet street into a major route into the city centre.

The developer plans to close Rigby Street in Carntyne which residents say would cause traffic to use Myreside Street heading to and from Glasgow city centre leading to danger for children in the estate.

The firm said it is not  a choice it has to make.

Chris Clark, who bought his home on Myreside Street said he made 25 visits to the show home before he bought and said and at no time was the closure of Rigby Street mentioned.

He said: “Bellway did not advise me they planned to close Rigby Street, If I had known, I would have held off.” “This is also very dangerous due to the very tight streets and many children are in the estate.”

He said residents were told at a public meeting that Bellway would review the proposal but then later were told it was sticking to its plans.

Mr Clark added “Bellway conned everyone into believing they would submit new plans which everyone seemed to be happy with.”

Residents of the Eastfields Estate, built by Bellway Homes, approachedlocal politicians for helplast year , when they found the developers were planning to shut the road,

The residents are adamant that these plans were never specifically highlighted during the sales process.

Ivan McKee SNP Provan, MSP is backing the residents. He said: “If this was a retail purchase, the residents would have returned their homes to the shop for a full refund. “As consumers they feel they were sold faulty goods that are not ‘fit for purpose’ and they expect Bellway to have a consumer ‘goodwill’ policy that addresses their complaints”.

Annette Christie, councillor for North East, said “We were so hopeful that a solution would be found so this news was devastating and appears to be based purely on cost”.

The MSP and councillor have met with council officials and the developer to try to reach agreement.

Bellway Homes said it was reuqired by Glasgow City Council to close Rigby Street.

A spokeswoman said: "The planning process required extensive master planning and consultation with the Council. Bellway were required to meet the Council's requirement to develop along the existing adopted road network which included Myreside Street and stop up the existing roads at Rigby Street and Myreside Street (East).

"In addition, as part of the requirement to provide safe and secure school access and minimise direct driveway access to major roads, the planning design concept required minimisation of direct access onto Myreside Street and the stopping up of Rigby Street. It is understood by Bellway that the road pattern is designed to ensure the safety of pupils and staff attending Westmuir High School and avoid vehicles reversing from residential driveways directly on to a busy thoroughfare."
