A DRIVER nearly came off the road after a pothole punctured TWO tyres on the same side of his car.

Aadil Ahmed had the frightening near-miss experience on Clevedon Road near to Maryhill Road.

He missed the giant crater because it was raining too hard to see it.

But we were so shocked by Mr Ahmed's story we sent one of our photographers out to take a look.

And you can see from these images that the pothole nearly swallows a 1.5 litre water bottle.

Mr Ahmed said: "I hit this pothole on Cleveden Road on January 28 and it punctured not one but two tyres on the driver side.

"The pothole was unavoidable. Since it was raining it was difficult to identify.

"I almost lost control of my vehicle as I couldn't feel the steering after it slashed through two of my tyres."

He added: "I'm currently claiming through the council but this could have caused a serious accident.

"The size of the pothole was similar to that of a full size basketball - unfortunately couldn't measure as it was a busy road - and I have no idea how long its been there."

Mr Ahmed contacted the Evening Times in response to our #spothole campaign - looking for the worst pothole in the city.

Gillian Barr had also got in touch to tell us about a pothole on Prospecthill Road in Toryglen.

She was left furious after the crater damaged her son's car and, despite reporting it, it was not repaired.

Ms Barr said: "This pothole caused significant damage to my son's vehicle during the Christmas holiday period and I reported it as an emergency to Glasgow City Council.

"It was still sitting the same way somewhat three to four weeks later."

After reading about our plea, Bob Waddell also called in to flag up the state of the roads where he lives.

Mr Waddell was bemused to see workmen outside resurfacing the pavements near his home while the road is a mess of potholes.

Our photographer caught workmen cleaning up the debris from the fresh surface of the pavement at Barrachnie Road in Garrowhill.

We also asked the photographer to head back to the South Side to take these pictures along Cathcart Road.

Several readers have contacted us to complain about the thoroughfare, which has potholes and worn road surface along its length.

There are deep potholes threatening tyres and alloys at its junction with Govanhill Street.

Towards its junction with Aikenhead Road the surface is strewn with craters that make the road feel like a "rollercoaster".

Driver Sarah Barr said: "I feel like I'm at the fairground when I go up Cathcart Road.

"It's like a rollercoaster but at least on a rollercoaster you know you are safe.

"I have two young girls and take one to nursery and one to primary in the mornings and it's whacky races avoiding those potholes."

James Morgan, who lives in Toryglen, said: "I use Cathcart Road frequently and it's a disgrace.

"You see cars swerving left and right to avoid going over the holes in the road surface.

"It's like it's just crumbled away in huge sections."

The Evening Times is offering a prize of new tyres worth up to £1000 for the driver who finds us Glasgow's worst pothole.

We need you to take a photo-graph of the pothole using an item such as a copy of the Evening Times for scale and send it to us via direct message on our Facebook page.

Alternatively, e-mail your pothole to news@eveningtimes.co.uk, or tweet it using the hashtag #spothole.

Give us your name, the location of the pothole, its size and tell us how long it's been there.

The pothole we deem to be the most dangerous based on size, location and length of time left unresolved will win the prize. We will print your name with your picture.
