The leader of Glasgow City Council has criticised Labour politicians over equal pay branding their party’s record “dismal”.

She said their support for ending the decade long battle was welcome, however delivered a reminder that Labour was in office when the deal that fell foul of the courts was implemented and presided over years of court efforts to resist the judgements.

She tweeted  “For what it’s worth, I warmly welcome the support of @GlasgowLabour politicians & members for @SNPforGlasgow work to finally deliver pay justice for women. But a bit of humility & self-awareness about your party’s dismal history on #equalpay wouldn’t go amiss.”

Labour Glasgow North East MP, Paul Sweeney joined the march and rally at George Square giving his backing for the women fighting for equal pay.

He also tweeted his support and said “I'm proud to join women council workers out today in George Square who are fighting for equal pay. This needs cross party intervention from Glasgow City Council, Scottish Govt and UK Govt to end this impasse and sort out this huge pay injustice in Glasgow once and for all.”

Union members of social media backed the MP stating he had been supportive of their campaign since he was elected.

The council including SNP and Labour groups voted recently to end the court wrangling and focus on working towards a negotiated settlement.

Talks are scheduled to take place for the rest of this year.
