A section of the M8 will be closed overnight for more than five weeks as works get underway to replace barriers between junctions.

The closures will be in place between Junction 28 and 30, near Glasgow Airport, from Monday, February 19 and Thursday, March 29 while the massive barrier replacement takes place.

Laura Gray, Scotland TranServ’s Deputy Planned Maintenance Manager said:“Working with our sub-contractor, HBS, we successfully replaced around 13 kilometres of central reservation barrier along the M8 over the last two years as part of a major refurbishment scheme.

“Scotland TranServ has worked closely with Glasgow Airport and other key stakeholders such as Police Scotland and the local authorities to schedule these works, to reduce the impact on commuters and freight traffic.”

In order to complete the £600k project as efficiently and safely as possible it will be necessary to close the M8 eastbound carriageway between junctions 28 and 30.

There will also be an offside closure of the westbound carriageway during the first three weeks of the project.

Works will switch for the final three weeks, with closure of the M8 westbound and an offside closure of the eastbound carriageway. Local diversions will be clearly signed.

Laura added: “Already, on behalf of Transport Scotland, we have invested over £3million to replace M8 barriers that are reaching the end of their maintainable life.

"We’ve improved lighting with hundreds of new energy efficient LED lamps and refurbished overhead gantries, installing new LED signage, delivering long-term benefits to Scotland’s busiest motorway.”
