Popular supermarket chain Waitrose has come under fire for introducing an avocado Easter egg that isn't suitable for vegans.

The egg, which mimics the appearance of an avocado, is made with a dark chocolate shell, white chocolate 'flesh' and an inner cocoa-dusted 'stone'.

But after the chain shared a Facebook post about the avo-eggs, vegan shoppers were quick to take aim at the creation, claiming that Waitrose have missed a trick by not making it suitable for them.

Glasgow Times:

Rhiannon Moorhouse said: "Pretty d*** stupid to put milk in it when every vegan is obsessed with avocado and 2018 is the year of vegan food... Get with the program waitrose!"

Ysabel Francis also added: "Waitrose, this was your chance to win best Easter egg of the year... Vegans all over the country are shaking their head at you. Unfortunately I cannot purchase."

Liza Jasmina Stirling also wrote: "You made an avocado Easter egg that's not vegan? Seriously?!!"

Other non-vegan Facebook users also commented on the post questioning why vegans were so outraged by the unique Easter treat.

Gill Ewings said: "Why on earth has this post been hijacked by the ‘vegan movement’? Being vegan is a lifestyle choice you won’t die by eating this if you chose to be vegan, it’s your own choice to be vegan, get over yourselves!

"As a species we are naturally carnivores, our appendix does not function and we have ‘canine teeth!’"

The avocado eggs will be available to purchase in stores from February 20.
