COUNCIL owned arms length companies should be brought back under council control according to Green councillors as they negotiate a budget deal with the SNP.

The arms length external organisations, known as Aleos, including Cordia and City Parking employ thousands of staff.

The SNP is due to deliver its first Glasgow budget this week and needs the support of one other party to get a majority for it to pass.

The Evening Times reported last week how the Greens set their three principles that need to be met before they could agree.

Now with just days before the vote they want action on Aleos to put them back to full accountability to the council.

Allan Young Greens economy spokesman said: “It’s Greens who are leading the change in Scottish politics and if the SNP administration is as serious as it says it is, about taking a different path from the last party in power, then it will want to give consideration to our proposals.

“We’d like them to show that by beginning the process of taking all ALEOs, including Cordia and Community Safety Glasgow, back under full council control. This would ensure more democratic accountability for key services for the people of Glasgow and also mean better conditions for workers.”

The Greens are the most likely party to agree a deal with the SNP allowing the budge to pass.

Allan Gow, City Treasurer, told the Evening Times last week the SNP administration has been speaking to the Greens and said there were areas of mutual interest being explored.
