A GLASGOW councillor wants the city to tell the UK government that “bigoted and Islamophobic” Donald Trump should not be invited on a state visit.

Councillor Soryia Siddique will put forward a motion to Glasgow City Council on Thursday asking politicians to back a call to tell the US President he is not welcome in Scotland.

No date for a state visit has been arranged but Dr Siddique believes the President should not be welcome due to his "bigoted attitudes".

She wants money saved from cancelling any state visit to go to charity instead.

Her motion to the council reads: "Council condemns President Trump's bigoted attitude towards women and ethnic minorities and condoning of Islamaphobia which results in hatred and division.

"As such, Council calls upon the UK Government to abandon plans to invite Donald Trump on a state visit, and the Scottish Government to send a message to President Trump that he is not welcome in Scotland.

"Council further believes that the huge security costs of the trip should be paid instead to charities that promote peace and understanding, such as the Jo Cox Foundation."

Mr Trump has previously said he does not care about calls to ban him from a UK visit following previous protests about the possibility.
