THE SFA has approached Queen’s Park with a view to buying Hampden which could save the stadium.
The Glasgow club confirmed the request for talks was made with a price of £2m understood to be mentioned.
Ownership of the old stadium was one issue discussed last year and it is likely to be a deciding factor in persuading the SFA to remain at Hampden when its lease runs out in 2020.
A decision on whether to renew the lease is due this summer coming down to a straight choice between Hampden or moving matches to Murrayfield.
The SFA refused to confirm it had made an approach to buy Hampden but Queen’s Park said talks had taken place.
The club are reported as saying: “Scottish football has changed since we were formed in 1867 and from when we moved into the existing Hampden in 1903, so perhaps this is the time to look at a new ownership model for the stadium.”
“The request was presented to members of the club. Their response wills will help inform how the club moves forward.”
The SFA has ruled out switching international matches and cup finals to Celtic Park and Ibrox after it rejected a bid by Celtic and Rangers to host matches.
The Evening Times has launched the Save the Hampden Roar campaign calling on the SFA to remain at Hampden.
It has the backing of politicians, football legends and business leaders who do not want the significant economic benefits lost to the city.
A spokesman for the SFA said: “We are working with all key stakeholders to consider the strategic, financial, operational and supporter related aspects of each option with a view to making a decision later this year.”
