A FOOTBALL boss is in an 'extremely serious' condition after being gunned down on a Cambuslang street.

Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl was shot in the face and stomach on Borgie Crescent around 8.50pm on Wednesday.

The father-of-two has undergone surgery for a facial injury and his condition has been described as ‘life threatening’.

McColl is currently in hospital under sedation.

Police are supervising both him and his family until a motive is established and it can be confirmed that the threat on his life has ended.

The shooting took place as the 48-year-old was in or outside his car.

He had been visiting his relative at a nearby hospital in the hours before.

After being shot twice, he then made his way to the Kirkhill Bar on Cadoc Street.

Police have since found a burnt out Ford Focus which is believed to be linked to the crime.

Detective Superintendent Allan Burton said teams are currently looking at where the car came from and how it left the scene.

He added: “My team are investigating the shooting and attempted murder of Paul McColl at around 8.50pm on Wednesday.

"We are asking anyone who was in this vicinity, it is a housing estate, there would've been a lot of people around.

"Mr McColl was shot in a lane nearby. We have recovered a car which we know Mr McColl uses.

"We suspect he was shot at or in that car.

"The shooting was a targeted attack on Mr McColl. The circumstances surrounding why he was attacked, we will be investigating fully.

"We believe it was him they were looking for, so the risk to this community is very low - we do not believe anyone will be coming back to here.

"But the fact a firearm was discharged is a concern to us. We have high profile patrols in the area.

"We are waiting for a full medical examination but we can confirm he sustained two gunshot wounds.

"Paul McColl is 48-years-old, he has two children and is well known within the community.

"He has been shot twice. He had an injury to his stomach area and an injury to his face which he has undergone surgery for.

"He is stable but his condition is serious and life-threatening.

"We have recovered a Ford Focus, due to the close proximity to the crime, we suspect it has been involved in the shooting.

"Anyone who has seen this vehicle, or any vehicle driving at speed to contact us.

"We will be focusing on identifying the background of Mr McColl's lifestyle including identifing anyone who may have a grudge and any potential link to organised criminality.

"We are carrying out forensic examination of clothing and of the vehicle and looking at CCTV and carrying out house to house enquiries."

Detective Inspector Stephen Tennant from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team (West) said: “I would like to speak to anyone who was in Borgie Crescent or Cadoc Street last night and saw or heard anything at all suspicious.

"I would also ask anyone who was in the vicinity of Turnlaw Road near to East Greenlees Road between 8.30pm and 9pm who may have noticed any cars parked or anyone making off from the scene to get in touch.”
