PUPILS have reported bullying incidents more than 170 times to a mobile phone app where they can remain anonymous.

North Lanarkshire is one of the first authorities in the UK to offer pupils the technology, where they can alert schools to incidents.

More than 7,000 pupils in 19 schools are now using it to report bullying as well as friendship issues and mental health concerns.

Recent figures show 30% of children and young people in Scotland experience some form of bullying at school, and almost half of children and young people who experience bullying never report it through fear, embarrassment or lack of faith from support systems.

David Craig of North Lanarkshire Council Education Department, said: “All forms of bullying are completely unacceptable and we are always engaging with schools to work on effective ways to eradicate it.”

“Feedback from schools has been fantastic and staff are finding the app extremely useful in opening up an extra line of communication with pupils to resolve cases quickly and effectively."

Michael Brennan, CEO of tootoot, said: "With tootoot, students are able to safely and anonymously tell their place of learning about their concerns and worries, whether it’s a bullying issue, racism, radicalisation or homophobia."
