AN UBER driver hopes to hold on to his licence after launching a man down a set of stairs in a city centre bar.

The victim, who was on a work's night out, suffered a grazed nose, dislodged middle fingernail and skinned knuckle.

Angus Arthur, 50, has been ordered to keep himself out of trouble for the next year after starting the rammy in the now-closed Yates's.

It was around 9.30pm when the accused accosted the complainer on the stairwell within the venue. Arthur punched and kicked the man during a short struggle, causing him to fall down the stairs.

The victim contacted the police following the assault, but despite his injuries did not require medical treatment.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Arthur pleaded guilty to punching a man repeatedly, kicking him on the body, and causing him to fall down the stairs within Yates's in Sauchiehall Street on March 11, 2017.

In defence it was explained that there was history between the two men, but the accused's violence was described as "completely out of character".

Sheriff Gerard Bonnar stated that he was "prepared to test that with a period of good behaviour", adding that if he was satisfied the incident was a one-off Arthur would be admonished in a year's time.

The defence agent said the deferment was the "best way forward" so as the accused had a chance to keep his Uber licence with the council.

Arthur, of Reid Street in Hamilton, will return to court on February 27, 2019.

Following the case, a spokeswoman from Glasgow City Council said: "We do not hold information relating to this conviction.

"Anyone with a licence to drive a taxi is required to tell us of any convictions they incur during their licence period."

Uber have been contacted for comment.
