SATURDAY morning gym goers - some in their swimwear - were evacuated from a Glasgow leisure centre after a small fire sparked an alarm.

Firefighters rushed to the scene at Scoustoun Leisure Centre at around 10.05am after the fire alarm went off.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire was small and within a light fitting.

The evacuation, however, included fitness enthusiasts who were swimming, and one Twitter user was not impressed with how the incident was handled.

Glasgow Times:

Jeflew said: "The one time I go swimming at Scotstoun in god knows how long and there’s a fire. Evacuated in my swimming costume.

"I’ll add, the poor staff were trying their best, but weren’t at all prepared for this eventuality. I smelled smoke and immediately got out of the pool, went to tell the member of staff standing by the alarm. I grabbed my bag and towel, and headed for the exit.

"Meanwhile, the staff dithered a bit and then said to each other that they should ‘do an evac’ and then the alarm started. They didn’t have a clear process; once outside there didn’t seem to be an evac point. There weren’t enough blankets, we stood outside for ages in the cold."

The Twitter user added: "There were parents with tiny freezing children and we weren’t directed over to the stadium building until a Mum pointed out how ridiculous it was.

"As far as I know, everyone got out safely. We eventually were in the warmth of the changing rooms. I had my bag, so put my clothes on over my costume and headed off. Fire engine was there when I left. Home now, and ready for a warm shower."
