THE Beast from the East has ripped open Glasgow's roads.

As our pictures show, the hard work done by road crews before last week's Arctic blast has been undone by freezing temperatures and thick snow.

On Paisley Road, Kinning Park, one impressive pothole was so deep it could hold a traffic cone.

Around the city the snow is melting away to show craters in the road, damaged tarmac and deep holes.

As part of our #spothole campaign we sent our photographer out to take a look and the evidence of weather damage was everywhere.

But Glasgow City Council said its work to repair the city's roads is already underway.

Four pothole teams were sent out to carry out emergency repairs as soon as the thaw began.

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, said: “Freezing temperatures, snow and ice do not do road surfaces any favours - so we have been very aware, all through the last week, that the thaw would reveal a lot of potholes and other defects.

“As soon as the snow began to ease off and we were able to make some headway on the roads, we put four teams out to carry out emergency repairs and once we know what the full impact is, we’ll factor it into our ongoing plans."

During the "snow week" in Glasgow that ended on January 21, squads carried out 394 temporary repairs per day - 3,546 over nine days.

Although figures are not yet available, the deep freeze of last week is certain to rival that of January.

Drivers and cyclists are still sending in pothole pictures for our campaign to find the biggest pothole in the city.

One reader said Briarwood Court in Mount Vernon is riddled with potholes.

Another claims work has still not been carried out to improve Cathcart Road, on the South Side, where potholes line the street.

Councillor Thomas Kerr praised our campaign on Twitter and asked for residents in his Shettleston constituency to tweet us and him with locations of potholes.

He said: "Great campaign by @TheEveningTimes to tackle Glasgow's pothole problem.

"If you live within Shettleston tweet away #spothole but also make sure you @ me & I can report it to the council.

"#CommunityMatters #Shettleston."

Council bosses are now saying they need our readers' help following the snow week.

They want you to identify potholes across the city so teams can get out and make our roads safer.

Ms Richardson added: “We need help from the public - and the more that people use our website and the MyGlasgow app to report any new potholes, the better we will be able to target our resources.

“Just before the cold spell, we passed a budget for the next financial year, which includes £23 million for roads, footways and road safety.

"That is probably our biggest ever investment in the conditions of our roads and pavements and I’m determined to see every penny of it make our streets better and safer.”

Time is running out to enter our #spothole campaign.

The Evening Times is offering a prize of new tyres worth up to £1000 for the driver who finds us Glasgow's worst pothole.

What is your response? These are 2 together on Royston Rd at St Philamena’s Chapel. I ran over them in the dark Tuesday night 9th January. As you can see they are huge and filled with water which makes it even harder to see, at least 3” of water another 2” to road level = 5”deep. Something needs to be done. Im raging as my Road Tax is due Febuary, what are we paying it for.
