HEAVY snowfall has delayed teachers’ journeys as schools were forced to open later than usual.

South Lanarkshire Council informed parents this morning of schools which would be opening at 10am instead of 9am as bad weather conditions hit busy rush-hour quotes.

Forth, Canberra, Greenhills and East Milton primary schools in South Lanarkshire were among those to open late.

East Renfrewshire also informed parents at 10am that "staff [were] still on route" as residents aired their concerns about potentially dangerous roads.

One resident wrote on Twitter: “School buses from Neilston to Barrhead are not making it down the hill. No teachers have arrived at St Thomas’ Primary in Neilston and very few teachers have made it to St Luke’s.”

Another user told South Lanarkshire: “Just close all schools. The roads are murder.”

Glasgow Times:

“The snow is supposed to be on until after lunch so kept my kids off today. Two have  have Additional Support Needs transport so not worth the risk of them getting stuck,” was another gripe to be posted.

She added that adequate supervision was in place until they made it in.

The council further reassured locals on Twitter: “We know many people have experienced slow and difficult commutes this morning due to the adverse weather. Our gritters were out from 4am treating priority routes, but snow falling onto freezing road surfaces has made driving conditions difficult.

“There are currently 11 gritting vehicles out treating priority routes, concentrating on upland areas, and six teams treating footways concentrating on schools in upland areas.

“Police have asked for our assistance to close the B775 Gleniffer Rd between Paisley and Muirhouse Farm at Sergeantlaw Road. Renfrewshire Council have closed it at the Paisley side.

“Schools remain open and, where staff are still on route, interim arrangements have been put in place to ensure adequate supervision.”

A South Lanarkshire Council spokeswoman confirmed at 10.30am that all schools were opened and it was business as usual.

The delays come amid a yellow “be aware” weather warning for rain and snow across Glasgow and its surrounding areas until 9pm tonight.

The Met Office said: “Scattered snow showers will affect Scotland during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“A spell of persistent rain and hill snow is expected to develop through Tuesday morning across southern Scotland, extending into the north in the afternoon and evening.

“Delays to travel and public transport could occur from snow on higher ground.

“Spray and flooding on low level roads will probably make journey times longer.”
