A FRAIL pensioner was mugged by a heartless thief operating in one of Glasgow's busiest shopping areas.

The Evening Times understands that the 85-year-old woman was targeted on Tuesday afternoon by another woman at the popular shopping haunt TJ Hughes on Argyle Street.

The woman, who was carrying a handbag, took the pensioner's bag and made off.

It is understood that the thief was carrying her own handbag and would have been seen making her getaway with a second.

The victim of the mugging lost money as well as sentimental items which were contained within the bag.

The theft happened at around 2pm but was reported two hours later.

Police Scotland confirmed they are now investigating the incident and said their enquiries were ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "At around 4.20pm on Tuesday, March 6, Police received a report of a handbag having being stolen from an 85-year-old woman at a premises on Argyle Street earlier that day.

"Enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with any information should contact Police via 101, quoting incident number 2569 of Tuesday 6 March 2018."
