TO celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week City of Glasgow College is turning the spotlight on its Modern Apprentices.

The college recently created five Modern Apprenticeship roles for young people with an interest in Business and Administration.

Freya Murphy was one of the successful applicants, securing a position as a Receptionist working across the college’s twin site super campus.

For the 17-year-old, from Stepps, it presented a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience, achieve an SVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration, and get paid while doing so.

Freya said: “I thought the apprenticeship was a good chance to get into employment but also gain a qualification at the same time.

"I love working at the college and on the front desk.

"There’s a constant buzz with students and visitors and there are so many different things to do.”

Anne Stalker, Administration Services Manager at City of Glasgow College, said: “Freya has already proved herself to be an asset to our team.

"She is hardworking and enthusiastic, and very keen to learn.

"Our college has a diverse range of students and staff studying and working across a wide variety of disciplines so it offers an ideal training ground for apprentices and their future employment prospects.”

The year-long apprenticeship began at the end of November and involves working full-time while completing work-based case studies and having her progress regularly monitored by a Faculty Assessor.

Freya added: “I’m determined to get my qualification at the end of my apprenticeship and perhaps I will stay on at the college, as a student.”
